The Mission of the Proposed Two Synod Constitutional Structure, is three fold:
A. To allow the Progressives and Evangelicals to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in complete Spiritual Integrity, in
their own congregations and Presbyteries, without interference. B. At the same time, "Cross-Over
Committees" would be established within the geographical boundaries of Presbyteries that over-lap each other, and
which are aligned with different Synods (e.g. a Synod aligned with Progressives and a Synod aligned with Evangelicals).
These 'Cross-Over Committees" would address areas of common concern, such as Social Justice, Social
Action, Outreach, Health Care, shelter and food for the needy, and other areas of common concern. The
members of the cross-over committees, which would be drawn from the over-lapping Presbyteries, would have
the effect of keeping the two Synods in constant touch, and in a constant working relationship with each other, at the
Presbytery level. This would strengthen the ties between the two theological camps, by meeting and working
together, every month, on very worthwhile projects in Christ's name. C. This type of restructuring should
encourage the Boards of Trustees of the seminaries and colleges of the PCUSA to endeavor to represent both Synods (both
theological camps) on their Board of Trustees. However, if a PCUSA Seminary or College seeks to be closely
aligned with just one of the Synods, within the PCUSA, this should be an option that is permitted
and perhaps encouraged. This would have the overall effect of adding to, and building upon, the intellectual
depth and strength of all of the PCUSA institutions of higher education. Please
Note: The following several web pages present current Overtures to the 2010 General Assembly which
are designed to restructure the PCUSA. In the end, restructuring the PCUSA, along the lines of some of our theological
differences, will help to maintain the overall unity and continuity of the PCUSA, as a vibrant denomination, over
the next century. Following the web pages containing the 2010 Overtures is a proposal
for a Two Synod Structure, which is not currently an Overture before the 2010 General Assembly.
